WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Kansas county’s government says it has been hit by a ransomware attack.
Ellis County discovered the attack on parts of its information technology systems Thursday morning.
Officials said they “immediately took steps to contain the disruption” by isolating the affected systems and enlisting the help of cybersecurity experts.

In a ransomware attack, hackers install malware on a device, often by tricking unsuspecting users into clicking on a harmful link. The malware then finds files and encrypts them, and the hackers demand a ransom to unlock the files.
Some Ellis County services may be unavailable, delayed or operating differently in the coming days or weeks, officials said. Residents should contact the department they need services from for updates on availability.
The county said there will be no disruption to public safety services.

There is also no indication that any sensitive or personal information was accessed, according to the county.
Officials said the investigation into the attack is ongoing.
