Virginia seniors lost more than $220 million to fraud last year, ranking the Commonwealth seventh in the nation for reported losses.
The Local Office on Aging says scam calls are a constant in Southwest Virginia and throughout the country. Fraudsters may claim your Social Security number is suspended or even threaten to arrest you. In some cases, they’ve offered to secure a fake cost-of-living increase for people.
“Seniors are a very vulnerable, or can be a very vulnerable population that scammers prey on. Always second guess and just confirm, not just blieving, that they are what they say they are.”
Ron Boyd, CEO of Local Office on Aging
